Time to clarify something:
n00b or noob = Person new to something, who is unwilling to learn and generally makes an a(hole) of himself.
newb or newbie = Person new to something who is either willing to learn, or unwilling to learn but non-a(hole) about it.

This is the distinction I've always seen. Often times i'll see someone get insulted when called a n00b/noob, but not when called a newb(ie). Although for some the reverse is perfectly true, as is those people that get insulted at both (the latter oftentimes are n00bs/noobs). But, the generally accepted deffinition among the majority of people throwing around the two terms is that n00b/noob is an insult, while newb(ie) is not.

I "hate" it when people "whine" about the use of the word noob, newb or newbie, when it all means the same thing, only n00b/noob is more annoying because it's leetspeak (you know, with the numbers and stuff) while newb is not.
(yes, that means I agree with you, except you're wrong about the definition part, they mean the same thing, but noob/n00b is more annoying -> hence more people get pissed off about it -> hence it's often seen as more of an insult)

Hmm, this hasn't been active in a while.
I didn't even know members got to use a special forum, so I might as well use it too. :P
Right now:
TI-BASIC - advanced/master - specialty: optimizing, making fake "viruses", etc (nobody else in my class really knows anything about calcs, so it's fun to play tricks on them.)
TI-ASM - have done "Greetings universe" and that's about it, stopped when my compiler started having problems and I started having headaches....
C++: beginner, trying to teach myself (took a semester course but it was easy (we barely got to functions, teacher didn't know what ^ as a logical operater meant)
HTML: Who doesn't know this? I haven't designed anything in a while, so probably a bit rusty
java script: Intermediate - haven't done anything really complicated, haven't done anything for a while
DOS: Not programming or anything, but doesn't knowing a few dos commands count? 99% of the people I meet can't even change a directory, and 50% of them haven't even heard of DOS. NET SEND is awesome at school since all the computers are networked and Windows Msg Svc is enabled for some reason. |

Throw it in a .bat file and you're an MS DOS Batch programmer.

ASM [8051/52]: (Beginner) I need to buy some of these
ASM [AVR]: (Advanced) I use this in all my gear, but still haven't tried all the features
ASM [PIC]: (Newb) 'Always liked AVRs better anyway. Will learn this one eventually.
ASM [Z80]: (Advanced) Still need to learn ports and FLASH stuff though
BASIC [Parallax 'STAMP']: (Intermediate) Haven't used all its features
BASIC [TI]: (Rusty) It's been a while since I've made a real efficient prog
C: (Intermediate) 'Use it for AVR now & then, but I'm not crazy about using C over ASM
C++: (Rusty) Hardly ever use it
CAD Drafting (Beginner): PSpice/Specctra and Eagle. Does 'paint' count too? Eh?
VBASIC: (Rusty) Made a few progs long ago and the rest is history
QBASIC: (Beginner) Starting to re-learn this one
HDL [ABEL]: (Intermediate) I hate it! They made me do it at school

Programming lanugages:
Ti-82/83/85/86 Basic (Very Rusty doesn't even begin to scratch the bucket.)
Ti-82/85 Asm (Extremely Rusty doesn't even begin to scratch the bucket hole.)
Unix/Linux Shell Scripting (What can't I do that Unix/Linux can?)
Perl (surpassed my mad shell scripting abilities)
PHP (uh, why does everyone insist on using this over Perl, including me?)
SQL (Don't look at that query of mine, it'll twist your brain up in knots trying to figure it out!)
Html (wtf? this isn't programming / I used to write webpages in my sleep)

see my post about suirrelbox...there's now a link to a version of squirrelbox that works on older JRE's, and now I have a working squirrelbox...yay..of course you peoples have probably already seen it but oh well, just thought id be helpful |

Where I'd like them to be (realistically) a year from now:

Basic: more or less an expert
z80: more than a beginner. I haven't released any programs, but I do write some asm when people ask.
C: advanced. I'll be working on an 89 project as soon as the basic contest is over.
C++: same as C, although I haven't programmed this since last year
Java: learning it in Comp. Sci this year, seems easy enough.
HTML: varies, it takes me a long time to do something and I usually don't think it's worth the effort.

HTML: expert; all valid code ect; tho look at CSS
CSS: basic, really need to teach myself more of this...
PHP: beginner, just starting first big project
z80 ASM: beginner

OS experiance
former Win power user (as micro$oft likes to call them) still dual booting to on occasion
newly switched to linux (fedora core 5 primarily) with debain also on my hd |
