For one, you're right. I don't know much about either, because I don't use them much. I can't remember a time when I used plain C for anything.

But wouldn't those extra features have to be interpreted by C? That would cause a slowdown also. It would not be as much as with python, but it would still exist.

Yes it is. Smile

Games are usually based off of an older game. Eg. Doom or Quake series games.

When someone makes a decent engine in python, it will probably get some development attention.

It just isn't possible to optimize such a difference away.

Look at Kllrnohj's definition of compiling:
Kllrnohj wrote:

By that definition, Python isn't compiled. However, you can byte compile Python, but it still has to be interpreted to be executed and can't be executed directly as it's not compiled into machine code, which is what Kllrnohj is referring to; more info here and here).

That's not how it works; C++ is essentially C with extras, but it's an independent language and isn't converted to C when it's compiled; instead it is compiled directly to machine code ("1's and 0's").

Compiling is not running; you can byte-compile Python, but you can't compile Python directly into machine code.

Actually a lot of games aren't based on older games; usually for larger games an engine is written and a game is built around that, and engines are either modified or completely built from scratch all the time.

You don't understand just how slow and high level Python is when compared to a low level language Wink
Ult Dev'r: to be fair, there are 2 separate projects (Pyrex and Cython) that generate C code from a derivative of Python, but it's still slow compared to hand written C.

Screw fairness, it's about what's correct and what's not.

Cython and Pyrex aren't Python; they just allow you to write C extension modules for Python. Basically what you're saying is analogous to "I have a program written in QBASIC which I can compile into machine code using program x".

I guess you missed my link to IronPython. And no, whilst that doesn't directly correspond with the rather narrow view of "x86 or bust" you can use ngen.exe to generate a native image from a .NET assembly.
For what it's worth, CIL bytecode is not interpreted anyway - it's JIT compiled.

IronPython is a Python interpreter written in .NET. It does not compile Python to machine code. Instead, it can compile it to CIL which in turn is JIT compiled. It still needs a full runtime, however, which is where it spends a bulk of its execution time. And I'm not sure how much of it is actually compiled to CIL and how much is still evaluated at runtime.

And ngen.exe sucks. Depending on the system, it doesn't produce a native image in the first place, and it often ends up being slower anyway. In the C# class I was in, over half the kids ended up with an ngen'd image that had nothing but CIL in it.

Regardless, IronPython isn't faster than CPython, so all that CIL/JIT compiling only serve to get its butt kicked: http://ironpython.codeplex.com/Wiki/View.aspx?title=IP26A1VsCPy26Perf&referringTitle=Home

If you want JIT compilation, Psyco ( http://psyco.sourceforge.net/ ) is a better choice

Uh, what? Why does it need to be interpreted in the first place, much less interpreted by C? Absolutely NOTHING in C++ is interpreted. It does have a runtime, but only for special cases like error handling and rtti (run time type information). Its runtime is also optional and very small. C is not machine code. C is not the lowest level language. C is not the only compiled language. Hell, C isn't even the fastest language (not for all cases, anyway)

You *CAN'T* make a decent engine in straight Python. Python is simply far too slow (and limited in its resource access). Instead, game engines are created and then use things like LUA and Python for their scripting engines. But you cannot make a decent graphics engine in Python.

Also, games are usually not based off of older games. Some games use another companies game engine (like the Unreal Engine or Quake engine), but they are rarely in their stock form and are often highly modified. Of course, the engines themselves are never "old".

You don't understand how ridiculously fast C and C++ are. I can throw a bunch of sleep statements in between lines of C++ and still have it smoke Python.

Quote:

Python is slower at doing math calculations than C++ by *A LOT*. Guess what graphics engines spend a lot of time doing? *gasp* math calculations! Of course, Python also got destroyed in other areas like binary trees.

Quote:
There are many reasons commercial games are developed in C++. Most consoles only offer decent C++ compilers at the moment, and game companies often have large amounts of legacy code written in C++; you can't just throw all that (and developer training) away!

Legacy code rarely enters the picture in game development. Most games either start off with a clean slate or use an existing (commercial or in house) engine. Even then, those engines are only good for a generation or two. And the reason consoles only have decent C++ compilers is because C++ is still easily the best choice for game development, especially on consoles where the entire goal is to reduce overhead to reduce hardware requirements. OpenGL and DirectX bindings for Java and C# exist, but only serve to show just how slow Java and C# are compared to C++ for things like games where low level access is key.

Modern consoles already have to drop to resolutions of 1280x720 or lower to stay playable. Switching to a language that can easily be 3 times slower isn't going to help anything, especially not developers as gamers are demanding better and better graphics (and now better and better physics). The performance trade off for reduced complexity and development time just isn't there yet. Maybe in 5-10 years it will be, maybe.
Legacy code does enter the picture often in the game development world. I challenge you to find a mainstream game using an engine that isn't descended from the doom series.

I know, but it's all in good fun.

Also, source?

EDIT: You're kidding right? The Half-Life series is listed in there. I know for a fact that both the Source engine and Goldsrc engine contain legacy code from the quake engine, which is an upgraded version of the doom engine, created by the same company.

Umm what? I didn't list any games created from a descendent of the Doom engine. Also, look up the games individually if you don't believe it wasn't made with a descendant of the Doom engine.

The above are Source and GoldSrc titles. I have the code for the Source engine stored on this computer. It includes legacy files from GoldSrc, which in turn has legacy code from the original id tech (engine running id's famous original games: doom and quake).

Here's a chart: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Quake_-_family_tree.svg
(Does this forum accept vector graphics files as images?)

The GoldSrc engine even started out as a basic quake mod.

Hahahaha, you are retarded. The Half-Life series comes from Valve, *not* id. Half-life 2 uses the Source engine, which was written from scratch by Valve.

Half-life 1 (and spinoffs) did use the GoldSrc engine which was a heavily modified Quake engine. But nobody uses the original Quake engine anymore. The last game to use the Quake 3 engine was Call of Duty, and even then it was extremely modified.

But even then, only 21 games used the Id Tech 3 (usually referred to as Quake 3) engine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Id_Tech_3#Uses_of_the_engine

The Doom 3 engine was written from scratch as well, and only 6 games have used the Id Tech 4 engine.

If anyone here seriously thinks that modern, shader driven DirectX 9.0c and DX 10 games still use code from even 8 years ago is an idiot.
