Ubuntu doesn't come with the proprietary software needed to open files like mp3. If you Add/Remove, there's a ubuntu restricted software something or another that will make them work. Mint has all that set up already. I use VLC though, which will be able to play the types you want. Don't know how to convert an flv file, I could probably do it with Studio 8.

iirc, the medibuntu repositories are your friend. lame, dvdcss2, win32codecs and vlc are good packages to install. I'm actually not sure what the real package names are for lame and dvdcss2, but you want those libs, and you should be able to figure out the package names by google.
I downloaded winFF because my friend told me to, and its great

If you really want lightweight and fast, there's rtorrent, but that's probably not quite up your alley. Transmission is good and easy to use- probably what you want.
For windows I'd say utorrent for linux deluge is nice but a bit of a resource hog at times, rtorrent and Transimission as Tari suggested are nice as well.
