Reading a programs icon

Hey, I was woundering if there is an official way to read out the icon of a program. I noticed that some programs store their icon at index 7 and others at index 8. Until now I just wrote a routine which searches for the icon within the first few bytes. But if there is an official way I would be happy to know. Thx
