My teacher's calculator a Ti 83 Plus Silver Edition started having vertical bars on the side of it after using it. This happened on and off for a while. Then it started having the bars and freezing after using it. Now it will not turn on. It's 9 years old. Is there a way to fix this?
TI-83+ SE
I am no expert but It might be a loose cable to the LCD. It may not be freezing the screen may just be no longer be rendering. Does putting the calculator any specific way help?
That is almost definitely the ribbon cable issue. If I had the calculator in my hands, I could fix it; it requires very very fine-pitched soldering. Aes_, the cable doesn't come loose; the conductor inside the cable degrades over time, as they used very low-quality cabling for the TI-83+ Silver Edition.
OH good to know. At least I figured out the problem. Does the 84+(se) have that problem also?

It very rarely exhibits this problem because they switched to a different type of ribbon cable. Unfortunately, when it does fail, as I've seen in one specimen, the cable pitch is so minute that I'm powerless to kludge a replacement together. Sad
Good to know.

Could you explain how to fix it? Question Smile

I previously wrote a topic that outlined the repair process, but I should again stress that this is only for experienced solderers.

I would say that without Kerm's amazing wiring skills, it would be pretty tough to fix the calculator.

Kerm, is it possible for this to happen on a TI-84+? or is it a TI-83+ only thing?
