Can the ti83 solve for a variable? as in;
3x+2=8?
Yes, use the equation solver found in the MATH menu. Note that the equation is set up to be equal to zero, so subtract one part of the equation from the other.
0=(3x+2)-8

The polynomial solving APP is even better, if you have an 83+ or 84+.

It doesn't work for trig functions or square roots.
Blargh, that seems like a pair of pretty glaring omissions, especially the latter. I'll concede that trig functions are quite non-trivial to solve in some cases.

That didn't work for me... I got X=0. (I went into math and clicked solver)
What does work for me is the test menu with the equal sign. As long as the question is multiple choice, just type in one of the possible x values and the equation. (a lot easier to do than explain...)
No, you have to press ALPHA-Enter in Solve, not just Enter. Notice the green SOLVE above the Enter key.
