Eh, that's what I've heard it referred to as, so I figured I'd stick with fairly common terminology.
Oh, I just thought of an explanation: Did you add spaces? Each character has a space at its end, so the other character doesn't mash up with it.

If it's a 21x8 character display, not 20x8, then that would explain the discrepancy.
