The USB port can be used for games. It's just that syncronization is non-existent unless you code it yourself. I have made little routines that use Kevin Kofler's ROM calls that just send high score data so that one person can send their high scores to another calc so they can be beaten (attempted at least). That is the way the 68k USB works, and I would imagine the z80 isn't too far off (although nice single line calls definitely don't exist).
Now that's a project. Write send and receive byte routines for the USB.

Especially with no real way of testing whether the byte was received or not. Plus, the USB can't be made to wait forever (probably due to power restrictions), so you have a very limited space to receive data. I would imagine that lots of data would get lost very easily and frequently. The I/O is still way more reliable than the USB is for calculators. So, I offer this advice: get I/O working 100%, then try to build USB routines for any game/program.
