By the way, more on picking good starting projects can be found in my editorial linked below. As other people said, starting in TI-BASIC with something a little smaller than the scope of this project will help you find your programming legs, then you can dive back into this project once you are more experienced:

For what it's worth, I do that trick with recycling computer PSUs all the time, although I've never purpose-bought a computer PSU specifically for a non-computer purpose. To power the LED lighting and fans in my room, I use a laptop power adapter-shaped brick that used to power a USB=SATA/IDE adapter, and hence provides nice clean 5V and 12V.
_________________

I think I'm getting too jaded; not a whole lot impresses me anymore. My new tablet PC has 12 hours of battery life, but only because it has a metric heckton of batteries. Battery technology has been improving at a glacial pace, and if "Who Killed the Electric Car" is to be believed, Big Oil has some responsibility for this. Other than that, everything that makes this laptop better than my older ones just represents incremental improvements, like a somewhat faster processor, a bit more RAM, and so on. I'm both excited and disappointed in the TI-84+CSE: excited that the line continues, and disappointed that it doesn't represent a larger leap forward for the line. The HP Prime impresses me, especially the software side, but the hardware side is not leaps and bounds better than the TI-Nspire, if preliminary rumored specs are to be believed.
_________________

Who says the 11th Doctor is guaranteed to be the last? Clara never said she didn't see anyone after the 11th Doctor, just that the un-Doctor wasn't someone she saw in the Doctor's timeline. On a related note, Moffat announces he'd like to continue to ruin the show:

http://www.hypable.com/2013/05/21/doctor-whos-steven-moffat-on-series-8-im-just-making-up-nonsensical-adventures/

Quote:

[22:17:19] < Link_> so, wait, if memory adddress say $FEDC = stackpointer, has the value of $FE,
[22:17:34] < Link_> after that command, HL = $00FE right?
[22:17:47] < Tari> no
[22:18:21] < Link_> then what happens when I do LD HL, (stack_pointer)?
[22:18:27] < Tari> if fedc is fe and fedd is 00, hl becomes 00fe
[22:20:43] < Link_> isn't that what I did?
[22:21:04] < Tari> you didn't say anything about fedd
[22:21:15] < Link_> oh, wait, the H regitar's value is affected by the one before it?
[22:21:28] < Tari> it's a 16-bit load

That is, it takes the two-byte value at the specified location and loads that into HL.

For example, we'll put 0x1234 in memory at 0x8000:
Code:

    ld hl,0x1234
    ld (0x8000), hl

We end up with 0x34 at 8000, and 0x12 at 8001 (seemingly reversed with the high-order byte lower in memory because the Z80 is little-endian).

With that, your ld hl,(xxxx) is equivalent to this:
Code:

    ld hl,0x8000
    ld a,(hl)
    inc hl
    ld h, (hl)
    ld l,a

Well, this is slower and clobbers A. But you get the point (I hope).
As a full example:

Code:

; ...

LD HL, (stack_ptr) ; (B) Load stack pointer
    LD (HL), E ; (C) Push the low-order byte
INC HL ; (D) Move stack pointer to next byte of available space
    LD (HL), D ; (E) Push the high-order byte
    INC HL ; (F)
LD (stack_ptr), HL ; (G) Save new stack pointer

; ...
stack_ptr: ; (H)
    .dw start_of_stack ; (I)

start_of_stack: ; (J)
.fill STACKSIZE, 0x00 ; .fill size, value
; same as having "size" number of "value" written in a .db statement

So, on line (A), it just defines a variable, STACKSIZE to be 100. This is only visible during assembly, and isn't actually stored on the calculator. Line (B) references another assembler-only variable "stack_ptr" which you can think of as simply being an address. The address, if you looked at that location under a memory debugger, would be a single word (because of the ".dw", "data word"), which in the case contains the address of "start_of_stack." Using the parentheses with an address between them (which "stack_ptr" is), causes the calculator to load a byte or word of memory into another register, in this case HL. After that command is executed, HL contains the value/address of "start_of_stack."

Line (C) uses indirection again, but slightly different. The parentheses load from a memory location if that's what's between them, or if it's a 2 byte register (Such as HL, DE, and a few others) it would load the memory that is contained at the address the register points to. In this case, HL points to "start_of_stack", so line (C) stores the value of register E to "start_of_stack." Don't forget that, when using "LD", the first argument is where to store, and the second is what to store. Line (D) just increments HL by one, causing it to point to "start_of_stack + 1." Lines (E) and (F) should be pretty self-explanatory.

Then on line (G) it uses indirection with an address to save the new value of HL (which points to "start_of_stack + 2" to "stack_ptr." This way, next time you run lines (B) through (G) again, it will be pointing to the next part of the stack and work as expected, so that you don't overwrite old parts of the stack.

Finally, line (H) creates a assembler variable "stack_ptr" which points to a word (I) that initially points to "start_of_stack." And line (J) creates another one and uses a Brass feature to create a large block (size STACKSIZE, or 100, bytes) of memory, all set to an initial value (0x00).

(Also, since I'm pretty sure someone will call me out on it: when using ASM, you don't necessarily "compile" code, you just "assemble" it. Assembling just changes the forms (one using mnemonics, the other using machine language) whereas compiling actually creates new assembly code from your program and doesn't give you full control over what the processor sees.)
_________________
http://tanner.myserverathome.com

Can someone please explain this code?

Code:

LD HL, (stack_ptr) ; Load stack pointer
LD (HL), E ; Push the low-order byte
INC HL ; Move stack pointer to next byte of available space
LD (HL), D ; Push the high-order byte
    INC HL
LD (stack_ptr), HL ; Save new stack pointer

I mean i get what it does, in terms of stack, I just need an explanation of what the commands are doing, especially with how the ()s are being interacted with.

Also thanks Xeda.
_________________

Does the 84+ have enough RAM pages (128K's worth)? Is the paging hardware the same? Surely some minor modifications would be needed to the ROM code, at the very least, though I could be wrong.

And what about screen size and LCD controller-vs.-memory-mapped interface differences?

You can see how the routine's starting to get a bit larger If you had a multiplication routine, maybe you could just divide by 10 and loop however many digits you wanted to check

EDIT: Oops, left my test values in
EDIT2: Made some small optimizations/fixes.
Wall wart 3A 5V power supplies are readily and cheaply available online, though whether they truly supply 3A is another matter entirely (really cheap power supplies from eBay are best avoided). I'd probably trust something more like these LED driver power supplies but I don't really know how well they'd work for you (I assume they output a constant 5V - the specs list "Constant Voltage" rather than constant current).

Ok so I've been programming graphics into Picraft and realized something-it runs WAY to slow so I am beginning to learn axe parser in order to speed it up, unfortunately that means I will have to recode the entire program in axe which will take quite a while, considering I don't know axe that well yet-Wish me luck!
_________________
Pi=3.14159265358979323846264338327950288419716939937510582097494459230781640628620899862803482534211706...

A laser cutter is a device that uses a laser (usually 20-100 watts or so), has an X-Y table (that is, motors can move something left, right, forward, and back), and the something in question focuses the laser onto the object you're working on.

Then, with a vector drawing (done in Illustrator, Inkscape, or some other vector graphics program), the software translates that drawing into motions of the laser, and the laser can burn/engrave the pattern into the object automatically, or cut some objects, depending on the power level.
Subject: TI-Planet contest: Dragon Ball Z treasure hunt
Posted: 21 May 2013 02:47:53 am (GMT -5)

In the Dragon Ball Z anime, C-16 is a cyborg created by Dr. Gero for the Red Ribbon Army.

It is damaged in an attempt to protect cyborgs C-17 and C-18 against Cell, and is repaired by Bulma and her father at the Capsule Corporation in order to participate in the tournament organized by Cell.

In episode 168 of Dragon Ball Z, while attempting to repair it Bulma manages to dump some part of the source code of the cyborg C-16 on her computer.
We briefly see two code segments, and we note that this is Basic code, Basic being a very common language in the 70s and 80s which was preinstalled on many 8-bits and 16-bits computers.

Here is a small part of the episode with:

a first code segment visible between 0min11s and 0min20s

a second code segment visible between 0min32s and 0min39s

We have the pleasure to invite you to a contest in order to win great prizes:
This 1st Basic code segment is actually taken from a much larger project. What could it be? (multiple answers possible)

This 1st code segment is actually incomplete and the end is missing. Without changing the already copied lines, develop and add a coherent end for the code and add it to your text file. (multiple answers possible)
Many families of Basic languages have existed, and the 2nd code segment actually uses a very specific dialect of Basic.

Give the exact name of the Basic language used here in the 2nd code segment.

Which computer (brand and model) could possibly have been available at the Toei Animation when the anime was being produced, so that they were able to copy this 2nd code segment from it? (multiple answers are possible)

Copy or adapt the 2nd code segment on the hardware, emulator or software of your choice. (the choice of monochrome or low definition screens is not penalized - only correct/complete adaptation of the code within the chosen constraints is taken into accound)
Ignoring the part you had to complete, what does this 2nd code segment perform?
You'll send:

the name and version of the chosen hardware, emulator or software

in a text file, the used source code, adapted if necessary for the chosen hardware, emulator or software

a file directly usable with the chosen hardware, emulator or software

in a text file, your description of what the program does perform (you have the right to attach fixed or animated images if some things are hard to describe)

Extracts from the rules:

If we receive several entries from you, only the latest will be valid
(meaning that if you send a second entry with new answers/modified answers, don't forget to add the other answers you sent us the previous time)

we will grade you answers once the contest is finished, and we will establish a ranking

if several people end up with the same grade, the sending date/hour will be used to choose

each winner will be contacted in the ranking order, and will be able to choose among the prizes left in
