So I have this upcoming FM radio broadcast I'd like to record onto my computer. It will not be streamed on the Internet. My equipment consists of a decently fast computer with plenty of disk space, a stereo, and a line-in cable. I also have an MP3 player with a built in FM tuner/recorder, but that will probably be used to make a redundant copy. What would be the best way to do this?

As far as recording the line-in socket to mp3, I've been using GoldWave v5 for Windows XP for a while with no problems. The initial recording format might be uncompressed, so I don't know exactly what the HDD or RAM recommendations are for those longer recording sessions. I'm pretty sure it also requires the LAME-mp3 codec in order to export to mp3, so make sure that's installed before air time or it'll be a nasty suprise.

On the Linux side, there's Audacity, I tried a lot of other Linux recorder/editors that didn't work out before this one. Ubuntu and openSUSE already have it in the default repositories, and I'm pretty sure the other major distros will too. It's also out on Windows, but I haven't looked at it since I'm already using Goldwave there. Cool

On the Windows side, there's also Audacity. The initial recording is done uncompressed, and you need LAME to make MP3s. The Windows sound recorder in Vista lets you record MP3s directly, I think.
