I've talked myself into it. But, don't expect this to be done within 2 weeks, or even 2 months. My coding time has decreased dramatically due to family issues.

After careful consideration, I've decided that Metroid Pi2 will be much faster and much longer. As of now, and probably for the final as well, it will only use 2 ASM programs--both used for program manipulation. (I'll let you guess what one of them is Smile)

This program manipulation will increase it's dependency on subroutines, but will also mean that there will be minimal code for it to parse--hence, the faster. (And the subroutines will be dynamic--beam stacking, anyone?)

The manipulation also means that I [s]will be able to[/s] can read maps from archive--hence, the longer.

This means it will be faster, longer, and probably have some more spiced-up graphics. Hence, the better.

The subroutines I'm using are a little slow, so going from map-to-map might be a smidge slower than Metroid Pi. But, it will also be extremely consistent, since loading each map differs in no way, except for code that might be executed for specific rooms.

So, here's some features I'm looking at right now:

  • Beam Stacking--!
  • Missiles
  • Save Stations, Recharge Rooms (actual rooms, not just powerups)
  • More varieties of enemies?
  • 3 worlds--! (Maybe a fourth, but there's 9 programs for maps already)
  • Same dynamic character appearance Very Happy
  • Hi-Jump, Space Jump
  • Interactive blocks Smile
  • Energy Tanks! Everyone loves energy tanks!
Suggestions? Comments? Complaints?

AWESOME! Woohoo! Yay! <Insert other exclamations>

I know everyone who was waiting for the original will love this one.
Unfortunately, I've never really played any Metroid games, so if I come up with suggestions, they might not stick to the original game.

And I don't expect it to be done in two months, with it having way more features. We can wait Smile

Just bouncing ideas off the wall here:

-Ice Beam
-Grapple Beam
-Charge Beam
-Phazon Suit
-Phazon Beam

Look here for ideas if you want.

Suits are kind of iffy right now. Charge Beam...not a chance in Basic. Grapple...prolly not...Ice and Phazon, maybe.

Charge beam wouldn't be that hard.

Regarding the charge beam, couldn't you somehow allow for the repetition of a button or a series of buttons (the spin charger in Nitacku's Bowling®)to fill a charge bar? This determining the power of the shot all while the enemy is moving and you are stoically standing still, charging the enemy's imminent doom.

Yay Alt codes!

I suppose. If you'd tolerate some slowdowns here and there...

FYI, suits are iffy because that means there has to be tiles you can stand *in* and interact with. Not fun.

Or we could make our own powerups. IMO, the phazon suit need not be a suit per se, instead it could be like a temporary invincibility powerup or item; sort of like the star from Mario.

That definitely wouldn't fit the Metroid-style game, nor would it be very useful IMO.

I'm seriously considering the Charge Beam now...

Charge beam would be pretty sweet. You could have varying beam sizes, each dealing a certain number of hits. This would enable you (since you plan for this one to be larger) to make the non-boss enemies a bit more challenging.

Now, making enemies harder, I have no problem with. I could also make them actively chase you instead of following a predefined path...

But enemies like those would cause the room to load a tad slower...

With the myriad of new weapons you could introduce, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have them follow you. And I personally have no problem with room loading times; just as long as it isn't painstakingly slow or something (i.e. more than 2 seconds).

I'll try to hold the beam powerups until the end of the game, so I can minimize the number of rooms with advanced enemies Smile.

That was one of the pictures in the Cemetech "Pictar Battlz" thread. Nice find!

And Harrier, just keep trucking. Everything gets done or ditched someday.
