This is really weird.. At first, my CD drive would never open again. I didn't care much because I barely use it anyway, I have a DVD drive anyway. But after a while i was getting annoyed because well, 2 drives is better than one. So I found of a way to open it manually, and I noticed these weird rings in the middle of the CD, the transparent part. It really feels as a relatively deep groove, and is sticky. I thought that the CD was damaged and that it was the whole reason the drive wouldn't open again.

But today, my drive wouldn't open again.. I got it to open after pressing the button a few times, but again, those weird rings on my drive.

Is anyone familiar with this problem? Google doesn't seem to be very helpful.

Attached is a picture of my Morrowind CD, the first one with the problem. I'm definitely not using this drive anymore..

Whoa, crazy. I'm no expert (never run into this before) but if I had my guess, I'd say the lense assembly is getting to close to the CD. Does it make any noses when it's spinning?

I think it's the spindle as the lense and laser can't get to the area of your disk that has this sticky stuff on it.

Just replace the drive if it does not work or is dangerous to the media you play.
New drives are extremely cheap. Especially do not waste effort on a CD-ROM.

You can get a new DVD Writer for less than $35.

Yeah, don't spend money on getting a CD-ROM-only drive, because not only have USB drives replaced the method of easy data transfer, you can also get a DVD(ROM, writer) drive for almost the same price Wink
