You might have better luck with a newer distro, such as Ubuntu 6.10.

I checked, it is, go for a 64bit linux distro, not sure if this is the program but it'll still make better use of your insane processor.

boot up information should never appear anywhere other than tty1, especially when you have done no configuration yet.....

Or you can use 32-bit and have things like drivers and stability. 64-bit was bad (I tested on Ubuntu 6.10).

I had this problem too and it was caused by bad drivers for a device (in my case a wireless card). Skipping the part where it attempts to load the drivers for it or possibly even removing the device could fix it.

I'd try ctrl+c when it' stuck first though. Should close the current process that's probably deadlocked and might just continue with the rest and work.

when I load ubuntu 6.06, it stops at

"/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off"

what's that?

strange... do you still have any other operating system installed, because that might hinder your ability to install linux.

Have you tried single user?

I.e. booting with the single option, no splash, and no quiet string to get a minimal boot and see any errors?

If you cannot boot single user, then the kernel is not compatible with your system.

However, you can add strings to turn off acpi or apic. Regardless, no special strings should be required with a core2.

You can also check /var/log/messages
and use dmesg to gather more info.

Try to find the name of what is causing the system to not load.

If there is a specific kernel module causing the problem, you should be able to remove it with rmod or something similar. You may also be able to visit /etc/modprobe.d/ to make modifications and prevent various modules from loading.

As a last ditch effort, you can compile your own Linux Kernel though it is too much effort most of the time.
