I did indeed sand it first for better paint adherence.

todlangweilig, that's because he took the keys out of the case before he painted, Smile.

I think he means the [2nd] and [alpha] labels, which are written on the case itself. They're invisible because I sanded them off.

Who cares anyway. After a while, you must know what keys mean what. And even then, he surely has other 8x series calcs.

If he's up to the extra work, he might even paint them back on, or apply them somehow.

Yep.

I didn't paint the front of my calc for that reason. I only painted the back part, but it doesn't look too strange.

Kerm, I still think that you should try to overclock it. It's not that hard to do, and it really does speed things up. I tried it on my 85. Smile

Yeah, overclocking it would be cool. It would add more "mod" to the "Uber Modded Calculator".

Just don't do it like this kid. Wink

Heh, good idea. More pix! As you can see, I still need to get the second stripe on the slide case, and I'm missing a few keys...

That looks so awesome. In the last picture, why is part of the casing missing?

That's a shot of the PS/2 port on the bottom.

*bump*

Sunday, January 7, 2007

I finished up some various things this evening, rewired a new switch for the CSA mod into the battery compartment, then completed the tedious process of reassembling the calculator. I managed to get keys from a spare calculator that were actually smaller than the keys from the one I was using, those they do stick or jam on the now slightly-narrowed key aperture walls. Pix below.

Monday, January 8, 2007

This morning I tested the PS/2 port to ensure it was still functioning properly; both keyboards and mice seemed to work fine. I found an old IBM mini PS/2 mouse lying around, sanded it down, and gave it two coats of my dark red glossy paint. Next, I masked off the first of the two silver stripes and painted it. The second stripe shall be added tomorrow. Pix:

The second silver stripe on the slide case:

The masked-off minimouse:

Three views of the completed front, although key labels are still absent:

For the key lables, I'm considering getting a red and a silver pen and writing in silver on red areas and red on silver areas. I'm also strongly considering varnishing the whole shebang - any suggestions on varnish?

Well, after seeing all this I have to vote "Cool idea, can't wait." What kind of paint did you use?

I did some research and discovered that enamel paint, such as that made by a company called Testors, was the ideal medium since I didn't want to spraypaint it.

Beware, the paint may start to wear away. That is what's happening on mine, and I think I used enamel.

If anyone wants, I can post some pics of what mine looks like.

Sure. I found out what kind of varnish it needs, by the way; I may try to do that tomorrow.

That's kind of the idea; it's supposed to be unique. Smile But I'm considering writing a tutorial when I'm finished.

Kerm, if you are really up to it, you can install a DSL port into your calc and maybe replace the arrow keys with a trackpad
