With no clue as to what the error was, I went through the process myself but returned no errors.
What's the error message?

But I thought scaling was on...
Error message: IPB WARNING [2] filesize(): Stat failed for /users/unitedti/public_html/uploads/av-958.jpg (errno=2 - No such file or directory) (Line: 1105 of /sources/lib/usercp_functions.php)
I don't think the file exceeds the limit; it's only 12kb in size.

The server still has to store the image with its original filesize and dimensions.
Is your image under 50 KB and saved (not renamed) to GIF, JPG, JPEG, or PNG?
[EDIT]
You have two options:
- Upload your image elsewhere and have your avatar link to it.
- PM AlienCC with the image to have him update your avatar manually.
