Here's an idea: we should have a TI-83x magazine. There's a magazine for every other gaming platform, why not calcs? I'm sure we could get Ziff Davis to publish it if it comes to that. Just imagine seeing calc games in EGM. Or we can do our own thing. What do you guys think? There's my Crazy Idea Of The Month©.

It does sound pretty hot but everyone is right, doesnt seem possible to really start a magazine without money and ways to mass produce them in stores. So, lets just stick to tight newsletters.

Also note that you'd need news for a magazine. As far as I know the 'calculator world' isn't actactly full of it (news).

Otherwise I think it's a good idea but like some of you said it would be too costy and a newsletter would be beter.

So we should have a news letter untill funds become available? Sounds like a good idea to me. Just to let you know, I can print up to 10 pages per day, absolutly free. If we do make a magazine, I could easily get it printed off and copied, almost for free. Another thing: if we end up with a magazine, should we charge for it? If we do, my recomendation is $1/issue $10/subscription. This would easily cover the costs of production. Or, we could send the idea along to Ziff Davis and read about TI calcs in EGM. </rant>

excatly, there's no way you could fill up a whole magazine full of nothing but calc news. I mean, look at the sites around here and how often they post news, maybe once or twice a week. Newsletters are best.

Yeah, but then we would need to mail the articles.

Basically, we would need a P.O. Box

Then we would need some content, a chief, an editor, a few wrighters, et cetera.

Not only that, people aren't going to want to pay unless it has news, and articles such as how to use a keyhook for the laymen.
How to do an interrupt.

Making sprites the easy way...

I say our best bet is to deliver it online and force users to print their own article.
We could do a log in system where only a user with a subscription can log in and get the article, or we could charge per artice.

Either way, delivering it on the internet will save at least 37 cents postage, handling costs, and printing costs. Not to mention delivery would be instantaneous and we would not need to pay for a P.O. Box.

The best thing about delivering an article online is that we would be able to pass the savings on to our buyers. e.g. instead of $1 we could do it for $.5

What do you think?

Maybe it will be only a quarter.

I don't know.

It wouldn't be impossible:

Some pages of coding (2)
Arcane Wizard's sprites Smile (1)
Game reviews (4)
New releases (1)
BASIC/ASM FAQ Monthly? (2)
Coding ... Explanations? (2)
Pictures, Spam, Ads (75) Wink

...Hey, we got a whole magazine!

Well, if we were to do something like that, we'd have to be recognized as an excellent group first. I kinda like the idea of a newsletter/e-zine but I wouldn't pay for subscription Rolling Eyes

Which reminds me, the August newsletter is out on ticalc.org...

I wouldn't pay for a ti magazine any time soon. I'm like calcs, but I'm not that serious about them. Wait, I have an idea! UTI members can be paid for thier work in magazine subscriptions!

Yea, I would like getting money from it, but who's money would I get? Who would actually subscribe to a calc magazine? Also, to get any real money, you would need a LOT of subscriptions. That 25c or so will have to be split up several ways between writers and editors.

Novel idea, just not a very good target audience (to charge money).

Most of the people who tend to be interested in calcs are the students, and math teachers. The teachers are going to for the most part be the only ones with money. They will most likely be less interested in the articles.

Perhaps the best idea is just to keep a news worthy section stuffed full of news related to United TI once the new website is in place? With as big of a group we have, there should not ever by more then a couple weeks without some kind of news.

I think tyler's idea isn't too far off base. And for the whole "news" fiasco, if it's a montly magazine, you can bet that there will be at least 2 news snippets.

Here's my layout:

front cover: what's inside
pp 1-4: ads
pp 5-6: table of contents
pp 7-8: ads
pp 9-10: news item 1
pp 11-12: ads
pp 13-14: news item 2
pp 15-16: ads
pp 17-18: calender of events
pp 19-20: ads
pp 21-22: upcoming releases
pp 23-24: ads
pp 25-26: coding tips
pp 27-28: ads
pp 29-32: program reviews
pp 33-34: ads
pp 35-38: program previews
pp 39-40: ads
pp 41-44: how to win (basically a tips & tricks section)
pp 45-46: ads
pp 47-50: letters
pp 51-54: ads
pg 55: next month...
pg 56: ads
pg 57: pxl-test (think backspace from PC mag)
pg 58: ads
back cover: ads

Here you go. My incredibly long effort at providing you with a magazine that's nice and big, but not too big.
