Even though I have an OK amount of RAM, I have THE worst processor in the world: an AMD Athlon (that's 698mHz! )

I'm trying to buy a Pentium III off eBay. Probably 1.xish gHz. Anyone got any suggestions (i.e. x=2, 4, etc AND pricewise)
Also, would my computer hold up to a Pentium 4? Feel free to ask for any specs but know I'm not a hardware guy

How does a P II 233Mhx processor sound to you? Yep, that's what I get.

What type of computer do you have? (desktop/laptop, year, manufacturer)

It's a desktop. My dad and I made it ourselves, but mostly a bunch of parts from a Dell.

Please tell me you're not planning on putting a P3 CPU in an Amd motherboard.

P3 won't be much of an upgrade from that Athlon, get a P4 or Athlon XP.

Agreed with that. I'd rather get a Socket 752 Athlon 64. Those are at a good bargain right now. Wink Sweet spot between performance and price.

No, it's not an AMD motherboard. It's an AMD processor. I have no idea what the motherboard is, probably some generic kind.
Edit: Yeah, how is that Athlon XP or 64 one?

You should really find out what sockets and brands your motherboard will support, before you buy anything ...

I have an Athlon 64, and it's awesome. How much money are you looking to spend? I can give you some suggestions.

I can spend up to 100 USD. How would I find that out?

A motherboard that supports AMD CPU's DOES NOT support ANY kind of Pentium CPU.

And since it probably won't support your new AMD CPU either, you'll need a new motherboard.

And therefor new RAM.

You're better off buying a barebone set.

Most of these should be in your pricerange:
