In light of what's appearantly going on between Maxcoderz and Nintendo (unless it's a April Fools hoax), I think it would be a good idea to ask SEGA for permission to do our Sonic project. If everyone agrees, I'll look into this myself and of course UTI won't be mentioned. It might be the only way to keep those rat lawyers off our backs. Mad

The Metroid one was a April fool's (at least, i wish so).

But it would be a good idea though, it happened once that someone had to stop making a game (monopoly for the 68K's) because the company that owned the rights didn't liked it.

Talking about april fools:
I found this on Omnimaga, apparently in development by someone named Floda Reltih (that's Adolf Hitler spelled backwards Neutral ):

The monopoly game was still made I think, the name was just changed to "Monoply".

No, the guy that made monoply changed the name because the other monopoly was copyrighted.

We could probably at least rename it until then (even Nintendo can't copyright the word "Sonic" or "Hedgehog"). I'll work on a permission letter this week. They shouldn't give us any troubles if we emphasis it is a non-profit ameteur project.

Probably wouldn't hurt, but I do think we will be ok.

Yeah, I've been doing some thinking about it and...well no one's gotten in real trouble yet. It might open a can of worms if the game companies start snooping around everybody's projects.

Man... there are plenty of Sonic games on ticalc (none are good, but they're there) and none of them have been sued! Why would you want to risk them saying no?

That's because they're not good, as you've said. If this Sonic game really gets as big of a hype as i think it's going to be, Sega could notice.

It will be. We just really really need to actually send them this. As soon as it is released.

I'm really torn on this. One way risks tipping off the game companies to other calc projects...and the other way risks us getting caught with no permission. I wish there were some Sega insider to tell me if their lawyers go after this sort of thing.

If we are going to be using this, we might piss SEGA off even more.

We're not going to disassemble. It seems even more stupid.

Disassembling would be even tougher than using Time to Team's code. Maybe since we're using a different console, Sega won't mind. Plus it would be a waste of their money to go after calc programmers.

Can you be sure about that? There might be some people at Sega who are more concerned about principle rather than whether or not something costs a lot of money.

Yeah, that's true. Maybe if we present it as an educational project, we can get more leeway.

Just present it as it really is.
