I have an HP DVD-RW drive, and I used to be able to watch DVD's on it untill I installed a new graphics card. I know its a driver issue with the DVD playing software, the thing is I have updated drivers for the graphics card, yet there is no drivers for the DVD playing software. I tryed to get new DVD playing software, but it seams alot of players use the same engine as PowerDVD (the software Im having troble with). Is there some software that doesnt run under the PowerDVD engine?

Ah sounds like a problem I had last week on Friday.

There was a laptop that would not play DVDs. It had WinDVD4 instead of the PowerDVD engine, but both are essentially identical in how they work and provide.

My error was Failed to apply overlay... or something like that.

Here are some basic troubleshooting steps. One of these will almost certainly work.

1. Update to the newest Direct X. You need at least Direct X 9 for new players to work.

2. Run dxdiag (start >run >dxdiag) This is Direct X Diagnostics

It will tell you if your Video Memory is being corrupted preventing a Codec from loading.

Click the display tab and make sure you have the following:
Direct Draw
Direct 3D
and AGP Tecture

All set to enabled.

If any of these are not working, all you will get is an error at least with WinDVD.

If they are Disabled, Enable them. If they are Not Available you have a program using the system resources Direct X wants.

Typically, the programs that case problems are Remote Desktop Problems.

Turn off NetMeeting
Disable Remote Assitance
Disable Remote Destkop
Disable any VNC services
Disable RADMIN.....

My problem was Zenworks Remote Desktop Driver for Novell Networks was corrupting the direct X api to the driver.

Reboot

Check DirectX diagnostics again.

If you are still having problems, verify your video card driver, verify you have the newest direct x, turn hardware acceleration to the max.

If you are still SOL, run MSCONFIG and uncheck almost everything.

Once you get Direct X running, WinDVD / PowerDVD will function.

You can then eliminate the bad process and restore your system to normal working order.

The Device manager should show no red X or Yellow Exclamations, and Direct X Diagnostics should show No Problems for each area.
