I've been having a weird problem that keeps my computer from finishing the scandisk and defragmenting utilities. Every time I run either program, I get the notice that says "harddrive's contents changed...restarting." This happens about once every 1 to 2 minutes. I've tried closing background programs, searching for spyware, turning off the screen saver, and even doing this in safe mode while explorer was the only program running. I hasn't always been this way, but for the past 18 months or so, it's been impossible to defragment.
Anyway, I'm running an HP machine with an unknown Celeron processor, and I have Windows ME (::shudders:. Could this be the work of a worm or more spyware? |

possibly. shutdown all programs you arent using while defragging/scanning. then try it. more programs you shutdown, less programs that can write to the harddrive |

Look around for speedy defragmenting tools, they'll reboot your system, run and defrag before any annoying processes get to start up.
If you want to know what CPU you have, download AIDA32.

Other processes are accessing the disk. Press Control+Alt+Delete and end every task besides explorer and systray, which are the only essential processes. Then you should have NO problem. |

You probably won't have a problem defragging, but you will have a problem doing just about everything else....
If you choose to try that, be warned not much will work until you restart. |

He uses ME, he's already having trouble doing just about everything else.
Also, there's the possibility of hidden processes, so I think downloading a third party defragging tool that reboots and defrags is the best option, leaving cleaning spyware/virusses from your system aside since that's so utterly obvious it's not even worth mentioning, not to mention you shouldn't have spyware or virusses on your system in the first place.
Oh, and I think the most common reason for defragmenting being interrupted by disk access is antivirus software, especially norton, turn it off. |

I'll try this AIDA32 thing and see how it goes. I should probably give Adaware a try too (it worked for my parents). How relaible is AIDA32? Any bugs? |

Aida32 is a system information tool, it just tells you what hardware you have, pretty usefull when you don't even know what sort of a CPU you have. It's very, very, good at this.
Why don't you try turning off antivirus and/or getting rid of spyware with hijackthis and spybot? |
