Digikey.com sells them for about $4.50, plus about $1.31 for a 20MHz crystal clock source (you can use any value under 20MHz if needed). You also can get them directly from microchip.com for about $3.50 (see product info guide here), but they do not carry quartz oscillators as far as know.

That's just the chip though. Also, download the MPLAB IDE software from their website, or get the IAR PICC Complier Demo from their product info guide. This will let you program in assembly code. C might be supported in other versions.

Also search for plans for a homebrew target boards like this one, so you can upload your programs to the PIC. After that, it's just a matter of practice.

so, my todo list looks like this,

buy a gameboy camera
buy a pic16F84 & clock source
build a programmer for it
and ..... learn assembly

Yeah pretty much. If you have an eBay account, getting the GBC should be no problem. For everything else you'll need a check or credit account to order parts; but don't order anything until it's at least part-way designed. Cool
