Okay, so I was trying to set up a new bootscreen and I downloaded this crazy program that makes a new operating system choice when you turn on the computer. So what I have right now is:
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition (bootscreen)
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition
Ok, so... everytime I start the computer, I gotta choose if I want the damned boot screen or not, quite an annoyance, actually. Someitmes I turn the computer and walk away for a minute and it's still booting up 'cause it gives you like 20 seconds to choose.
How do I get "Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition" so I can keep my prettyful bootscreen? |

if you look in c:\boot.ini there will be 2 lines that look liek this:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (BootScreen)" /fastdetect /KERNEL=SOMEFILE.EXE
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
the /KERNEL= tells the computer which file to use instead of the standard boot screen
back up your boot.ini, and then remove the last line that does not have teh /KERNEL= in it. |

Restore the backup the boot.ini that program should've made or you should've made before using the program. |

Problem is... I don't have any "boot.ini" on my computer, although I found the backup "boot.ini.backup". Any other advice, peoples?
boot.ini.backup wrote: [boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional (bootscreen)" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn /KERNEL=kernel1.exe
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
Note to Self: Never change bootscreen again...
EDIT: I tried making a new boot.ini under C:, but it didn't work. I'm gonna try re-installing that program again...

I did... but on WinXP it isn't that file that governs which OSs are in the comp, it's ntoskrnl.exe
By the way, I downloaded BootXP and fixed it... it had a pretty easy-to-use interface

I kno, but my computer does not seem to have boot.ini... anywhere. I ever did a search for it. Hidden files included. Your Bureaublad has it, not mine.

If you have a pagefile on c:\ it might be that you've got explorer set to show hidden files but not system files (difference=yes), since I don't see that nor several other system files.
(see screenshots, it says something along the lines of "hide system files (recommended)" and "Hidden files and folders: show hidden files and folders" in case you're no good at Dutch) |

you ARE a mod (remember free computer tech support provided?)
You have to be an admin to attach pictures like Arcane does. |

Everyone running NT, 2000, XP, 2003, or Longhorn or any other Microsoft NT based os has a boot.ini file. It is probably marked hidden and or system.
Just make sure if you edit, you get it right. Making a mistake will be a major pain in the a becuase widnows won't start up. |
