My first post.

I got this idea that using the link port, a TI calc can be used as a joypad for windoiws and macintosh computers. i have 2 ideas, like this one.

1) using a special driver and a asembly program designed to recognize all the keys as a fire button

2) build a special serial port link cable as a joystick port

I need more ideas, and help, for i haven't a clue as to how to do this yet.

But... why? Joysticks/joypads for the PC are relatively inexpensive.

That's true,

But I'm one of those people who likes to use handheld software to control desktops and other forms of convenence, plus, i'm afraid to ask my mother i want one.... for some reason, so I started this project. It's just one of many projects to use a calculator to control windows/macintosh/linux/unix computers. I know it's kind of unimportant to you, but to me, it's the project of all projects

Will the communication go through the GraphLink cable, or do you have to build one by yourself?

I am not saying this is a bad idea, because I think it is a great idea, but wouldnt this be another modification to the calc that will run out the batteries quicker?

I'm going to start with the communication going to the GraphLink cable, then build one

I think if you make a calc program that will send data just like a regular joystick you can just use a normal joystick driver on the pc.

Run a program on the calc to handle the input and send it through the cable correctly, to a com port, and then the joystick driver should do the rest.

You might even be able to add a switch in the program to switch between com mouse, com keyboard, or com joystick.

Using your TI as a keyboard or mouse? That sounds pretty useless.

What could be useful is modding a regular keyboard to act like them TI-keyboards, that are used for Notefolio.

But that would just force me to take a huge keyboard to school.

Teacher: What are you doing?
Me: umm... Maths...
Teacher: Why are you using a keyboard, and a 15" TFT for displaying a snake game?
Me: Umm..... I have to much spare time...

I Like you AW.

The prime Link cable (The only link cable) I have is a SilverLink, thus, I'm Mainly focusing on the USB port. And, there are USB Keyboards, Mice, and Joysticks, though very rare, in the marketplace right now. Sence i only have a SilverLink, I'm going to start with USB, then Serial.

Actually, USB devices are quite common.

This is an awesome idea. I don't know why no one has thought of it before. In my opinion, you should be able to use an Atari joystick like the one in my avatar! Very Happy I can totally see myself taking out a joystick in math class and explaining to my teacher that it's my "trig function solver" or something like that. Awesome idea. If anyone has lots of time, is really good with Asm, and wants to be my hero, make a game that uses an external joystick! :D

I know a few people with USB mice and keyboards. You can buy them in any computer store, but there mostly not very good. The main use is for laptops.

Or a calc mouse, then it would be possible to make REAL cool shooter games. Very Happy

Has anyone ever tried making a calc mouse that hooks through the link port?

I don't know... maybe?

I think it's more a software than a hardware problem, cuz when you just make a 2.5 mm stereo plug on a mouse, it could work, but only if you have an ASM program that can recieve the data and convert it into stuff the calc can understand, like the opposite of what Arcane says:
