I am having trouble with the sprite movement for my rpg. The 89 has RclPic (ors the pic), AndPic, and XorPic for displaying sprites. My problem is that the character has to stay on top of the background, but behind some things on the screen. I can do this, but not without the image flickering when he moves. The alternative would be to simplify the rpg: either eliminate the background the character can be in front of/behind, show only the screen without the character walking, or eliminate the pictures completely (the last would be very sad). Any ideas?

Does the character always flicker, or is it just when he moves?

Well then sorry, I can't help you. I made a game on the 83+ where you fly through space (black screen with white dots) and to erase the ship I just used a pic. I had the same exact problem, and theres no way to fix it and make it look good.

Theoretically this is possible, but I would need an 89 Asm utility to make the RclPics write to the screen all at once. Is this possible?

I had the same problem with the Robot War alpha. Eventually, I had to rewrite to game to only redraw sprites that the character was walking over. The program sped up by about 14fps.

This is going to be a side view, sort of like King's Quest 1. I'm not worried about the speed so much as good graphics, since I could always make the character walk more pixels per step.

To put a sprite in front of the others, I first rcl the sprite then and a special contour sprite. For example, I might
Rcl
00011000
00100100
01001010
01010010
00100100
00011000
then and
11111111
11100111
11001011
11010011
11100111
11111111
to make the first of these sprites appear "on top of" the others. I would of course have to save the picture behind it first if I wanted to move the sprite later.
