My 83+ SE doesn't seem to have all the RAM it's supposed to. When I reset the RAM and delete the lists, it only has 21706 bytes free. I don't know if it was always like this, but i just noticed about a month ago. Does anyone know what could cause this? Should I return it to TI? Can I after 3-4 months?

Check to make sure you don't have any archived programs or APPS. They don't get deleted when you reset the RAM. Also, I think the TI OS itself takes up a little bit of RAM. This idea is based on my iPod which does the same thing (when I first got it, it had no songs, but said there were 14.7 GB left even though it's 15 GB). If TI somehow "forgot" to put the memory on the calc and the OS somehow still works, then yes, you can probably return it for a new one.

There is nothing wrong with it!

That is about right.

When you have stuff in the archive, the VAT takes up room. Think of it as an allocation table in in ram.

Make the following asm program

Jp $ffff

run it
your calc will crash

Hold down clear and press on.

It will not rebuild the allocation table, so you will see that you do still have all of your ram.

However, without the allocation table, you will not have access to your applications et cetera...

Just go into the mem menu and reset your ram and all the programs appear.

Oh, I didn't know the VAT took up that much space. So are you saying if I delete some of my archived programs I will get more RAM back?

Yes, but not much. However, you'll get all the available RAM back if you delete everything. But I don't think you'd want to do that just for a few KB...

That's the cool thing about OS's like Mirage. They unarchive the program before you run it so you can play the game or whatever, then it re-archives it so you can still use all your RAM when you are done. This prevents a lot of manual archiving/unarchiving.

Or you could set it to just copy it to the RAM instead. That's my preference, although high scores don't get saved.

That's in the Options menu, if you didn't know.
