actually they do. if they are inspected and dont meet the standards they are closed immediately and all meat shipped from that location is recalled so they lose a lot of money. since the inspections occur often a slaughterhouse will be more profitable if they just obey the laws.

Don't they get a deadline to improve it all and if they fail to make that deadline and have a proper slaughterhouse by then, they get closed?

it probably is something like a probationary thing but i know that they are closed down at least temorarily.

If what I read in "Fast Food Nation" is true, then abbatoirs don't need to worry about deadlines from federal institutions too much.

Where's the option for "Wasn't eating beef to begin with"?

I'm a vegiterian(sp?) not because I care for the animals, but because the current meat supply is completely unsafe. When a meat cow is killed, the bacteria in it's colon, which were previously digesting it's waste, escape into the rest of the cow and begin to digest the rest of the cow. What do you think happens when people marinate meat?
