The question arose on another post, and I'm hoping for a positive outcome. Be honest, even if that's not one of your morals. |

The real question is what is right and wrong. |

whats right and wrong can only be determined on an individual level and as such there is to main set of morals any more. |

To simplify what is right and wrong further then it should ever be simplifed, but overall our freedoms and laws should all be changed to reflect this.
Basically if you're hurting someone else its wrong.
If you're hurting yourself you're just stupid.
If you're helping others then its right.
If you're helping yourself thats fine to an extent.
Everyone was born with a conscience and thus they know the difference between right and wrong, anyone who tries to argue against this point is lying.

there is one major flaw in what you said though. who defines what hurting yourself means...is it just on a physical level or would that be extented to emotional and psychological damage. also, how do you define what is going to far in helping oneself? is it going to far if others have to suffer or is helping oneself always wrong? |

Like I said, everyone has a conscience and will know if what they are doing is right or wrong.
Quote: also, how do you define what is going to far in helping oneself? is it going to far if others have to suffer or is helping oneself always wrong?
Obviously if you're helping yourself to the point others are suffering and you do nothing to help them, then that is wrong. On the flip side, if you're helping yourself to the point you have everything you need, not want, and you're helping others who don't have everything they need then this is Good or Right.
My theory is not flawed, just overly simplified.

Moralls four dummees.
helping others to point of harming self to extent that will prevent future assistance to others: good intentions, bad results
helping self to point of ignoring needs of others: bad
harming people: bad
harming self without helping anyone: psychological help suggested
achieving perfect ballance where most cumulative help will be given to others over lifetime while keeping those who are concerned about your health happy and yet still not compromising principals: sorry, you're not Jesus. |

It's amazing... This forum can start an argument about anything.
Come on people, surely we don't have to debate one another's possesion of basic moral truths - they are instinctual folks!!!
Reverently listen to your heart - as it bleeds from the katana protruding from it!!!

I don't see anything good in this list... what's the point of having morals then? |

Did you ever read Philosphy for Dummies by Tom Morris?
Borrow it from a library. It's quite great. There is a chapter on morals and arguments about them. |
