It's a Java clone of the classic DOS game Scorched Earch (it's an artillery game).

Yeah I third that statement, the 2d still has its charm over the newer 3d versions.

Not to mention that I feel it takes a bit more skill than the 3D version. The weapons seem a bit overpowered.

Not recently, did he play back in the day? My strongest memories are of TIFreak8x and I playing, although I know a lot of other people like you, Tari, and TheStorm joined in.
I'm pretty sure he did. He was in on lots of our Skype + Video Game sessions (TBM, Scorch 3d, etc)

I definitely remember the Scorch3D and TBM ones, those were a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to Freebuild so we can have some more epic builds.
