I recently downloaded a movie that was in avi format. I know i have to convert it to mpg before i am even close to burning it to a disk. My only thing is whenever i convert it using ffmpeg the sound is about three seconds faster than the video. Is there any kind of way to fix this?

I don't know about how to fix ffmpeg but you shouldn't need it, your DVD authoring application should do the conversion for you immediately prior to burning. (at least that is my experience)
As I recall, VLC can do on-the-fly format conversion, so that might be worth a try.
