You look them up by radicals (basically the common sets of strokes that make up each kanji).
I saw this in someones signature and I found it really entertaining:

I'm not to good with languages anyway, though. I've picked up a few common phrases here and there from Japanese, but no more than anyone else who watches anime with Japanese dialog, I'm sure.
Or not. It's inconsequential.
Woots for people who are bilingual! I'm half-japanese, and speak fluently,... so though I forgot most kanji from lack of use, I still understand videos just fine =D
