If you really want to be technical, all the president is is basically a figurehead. He has no complete power. Sure, he can veto the occasional large bill, and yeah, he's the 'commander in chief', but Congress can override his veto, and congress must decide if they go to war. Basically, the president is the face of the nation, and he can only, what's the word... suggest what Congress should do and stuff like that.

Correct me if I'm wrong though, because I don't really follow politics/government and stuff like that.

You're wrong. And I'm not going to go into detail.
Even if that was true, which it's not, because it's both incorrect and stunningly simplistic, the whole point of a figurehead is to present a strong, resolute face to the world, which the record low approval ratings would argue against in my opinion. But at any rate, you're wrong: the President sets the tone for foreign and domestic policy, both directly and through the cabinet [s]he appoints.
what if someday we had a president that was both a he and a she, then how would your post fit that? [he/s]he?
