I've been trying to set up a task in vista home premium that runs a batch file, but it isn't working.

The batch file works perfectly fine in command prompt.
I do have highest permission level set, and do have a password set for the user and for the admin.

Under the actions tab, I have (exactly as typed):
Program/Script:
cmd
Add Arguments:
/c "C:/Save/Alarm/Alarm.bat"
Start in:
C:/Save/Alarm/

When I run the script, it says running, but command prompt doesn't pop up, and the batch file never executes. Eventually, I terminated the task by hand.

You should be able to run the .bat directly (ie, don't run it via cmd).

I don't know if changing the filename to .cmd will help, but it's probably worth doing unless you're desperate for DOS compatibility (.bat is for DOS, .cmd is the Windows equivalent - are you using a 64-bit OS?)

I think i figured out my problem... for some reason changing it from "run if whether user is logged on or not" and the check box below is unchecked to "run if user is logged on" made it work, except now I need to be logged on all the time... is there a way around this?

depends what it needs to do, but I have a separate account that I hide from the login screen for running tasks. That way I also don't have to deal with a cmd.exe box popping up every 5 minutes. also, if you want it to run when you're not logged in (or the "task scheduler" account isn't) you have to give it the password for that account.
