I know this is going to show how much of a newbie I am with GIMP, but for some reason, no matter what tool I use to fill in a selected area, it doesn't simply fill it in. For example, if I try to fill in a circle with pure black, the center of the circle is black and as it goes towards the edge it gets lighter. And it even overlaps outside the selected area. My opacity is 100% and I can't seem to figure out why it does this. It doesn't matter if I use the paintbrush, feather pen, normal pen, or anything.

When using a Select tool, make sure Antialiasing and Feather edges are turned off.

I have both of those selections off when I use the selection tool.

Go to the bottom of your Tool Options and Shift+click the yellow arrow that forms a square. This should reset all values to their defaults. After this, I wouldn't know what to do.

That didn't seem to help.

Could it be that I am shrinking my selection by 1, rounding the edges, and then bordering by 3 before I try to fill it with black?

Edit:
I tried just selecting a rectangle and then filling it and it worked fine, so what is wrong with my changes to the selection.

Did you select the rectangle differently than the first time?

[ EDIT ]
Right, remind me to read posts more carefully.

It's because you're bordering the selection. Go to Select ยป Sharpen, then fill.
