OK, recently I upgraded to Windows XP Professional X64 and it's pretty cool so far except the lack of driver support by some manufactors. My linksys WMP65GX4 V1 does not work with this OS and almost no wireless adapter manufactors develop drivers for this platform (or any 64bit OS for that matter).

What better time to learn how to make drivers than now I guess. My question is where do I get started? I've never done this before and anyone who has knowledge in this field would be greatly appreciated if they gave me some pointers. I've seen that Microsoft has some development tools for this kind of thing, but I feel lost (haven't downloaded the software yet).

Has anyone ever done this?

It looks like to download the official WDF SDK you'll need an MSDN subscription (though I'm sure I managed to install the UMDF SDK a while back without one - maybe it was a beta).

Even if you had access to such a driver toolkit (or found an alternative method) you would still need to work out how to talk to the hardware, which I suspect is not going to be publicly available (maybe not even privately available!)

I suspect you'd get better answers on an MSDN forum or newsgroup, but I reckon it would be a difficult job.

Yeah I know for sure this is going to be a difficult task. Very Happy I think I may ask the same question on the MSDN forum when I get the chance. I don't know why companies should be allowed to sell the products and not offer support for the 64bit counterpart, but I know it all comes down to money and the fact that there isn't a large base with 64bit operating systmes as not many people use them and the support shows.

Edit: When you said WDF, Im assuming you meant WDK? The Windows Driver Kit seems to be available for Windows 2008 Server, but I don't know if it will work with XP or not. That seem to be the only kit listed there from the link you provided. I'll download it anyway and give it a shot anyway when I get home.

Edit: NVM it appears I should probably do more research to make sure I get the right kit for Windows XP. a it's already hard just to find the right kit. LOL. Since the kits seem to be more readily available for the newer Operating Systems such as Home Server 2008 and Vista I think I may have a harder time finding it for XP unless the above mentioned kit could be used for XP which I don't think so.
