Here is the run-down/repost of a problem that is getting very little attention on another forum:
Running an Open Enterprise Novell Server and Grub broke after changing the Graphical Display manager from KDM to Console and back to KDM. VMWARE Tools was also updated and GCC and the Kernel Headers were not installed. Upon Re-Try headers were installed. Any ideas how to fix it?

Background Info:
OES Linux SP2, using kernel 2.6.5-7.244-default. Controller is currently LSI SCSI controller. It has been moved among different virtual solutions (free VMware Server, to Workstation, to ESX 3).

If anyone has a solution, I would be greatly appreciative

After installing the latest version of the VMWare Tools, I rebooted my Linux VM and it just boots to a grub> prompt. The VM is configured with a 1GB swap partition and a 14GB root partition.

I've tried booting it manually:

grub> root (hd0,1)
grub> kernel /boot/vmlinuz

Error 18: Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS

I can get it to start by booting from an install CD, then selecting "boot existing." I tried changing the boot loader config in YaST and got the following error when saving:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
GNU GRUB version 0.94 (640K lower / 3072K upper memory)

[ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB
lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists the possible
completions of a device/filename. ]
grub> root (null)

Error 23: Error while parsing number
grub> install --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 / d (hd0,1) / 0x8000 (null)/

Error 12: Invalid device requested
grub> quit
------------------------------------------------------------------
Any suggestions? This is our only Linux server (I'm fairly new to it) and I don't want to recreate it if I can avoid it.

If anyone has any Grub commands to fix the boot loader, that would be awesome.
