I heard this "hides" the IP address. Isn't there an easier way (besides shutting down the computer and running the command prompt) to just change my IP address? Or does Vidalia "hide" the IP address by making it seem like you DO have another one?

By hiding it, I think it does the same thing as a "secure connection". People just won't be able to see your IP address.

as simple as that.

Vidalia is a frontend for tor. It does not hide your ip address, it uses tor to route your connection through other computers, giving you an entirely different ip address, as seen by wherever you're connecting to.
