I've been asked regularly about the benefits of becoming a UTI Member. The latest such question engaged me in plenty of research to address several points – some of which were answerable with copy-and-paste, while others had to be touched upon with new responses. Overall, this, as a reference, attempts to cover the basic details that one might inquire about when interested in the status of UTI Member or higher:
Quote:
Members who have applied for the UTI Member position are only admitted if they are considered by the staff to be "worthy" enough to receive it (i.e., they are helpful, active, and rule-abiding over a long enough period of time). They are distinguished as valuable members of the community. Not only does the position present itself in the form of a blue handle in the list of active users (as opposed to black), but it also gives access to a hidden subforum, storage space for one thousand additional personal messages, and the eligibility to obtain a personal subdomain (see: Hosting Rules). You should continue to be a positive role model once you have reached this status. Only applications for UTI Member are permitted; staff is appointed by other staff members.

Don't they also get an unitedti email address?

I thought it was also related to the quantity and/or quality of projects you're working on, or have submitted. At least, that's the one question I was asked when I applied. Of course, a balance can be struck: a member who is superior at answering programming questions can be forgiven a comparative lack of projects, and vice versa.
