As posted on Omnimaga, Calchaven got hacked recently, however JC did get the IP of the @$$h0135 who did it, and recommended that people ban 203.160.1.* from connecting to their server. Just spreading the word.

Why on earth would someone hack a calc site? It wouldn't be _that_ profitable. Really, most of the info you'd get you could find out from a quick search of the site.

Edit: BTW, ur 1337n355 i5 00b3r. d00d u r teh haXX0r! 1337!

It is more likely the IP was either spoofed, or a comprised machine that was used to do the dirty work, then the actual hackers machine. Besides it seems a bit overboard to block out a whole range of ip addresses.

well i doubt they did it for any kind of profit. Most hackers just do it for fun of course.
Although one benefit/profit they could get is experience!

A lot of people do something just for the power rush they get when people react. So if someone is irritating you (or a site gets hacked by one of these people), ignore them and they will usually go away.

AlienCC has a point. It probably wasn't the hackers actully IP address, they wouldn't be stupid enough to do that. We don't knows IP address that it is, but....I don't think it could hurt to ban it, at least temporarily.

Yeah, after all, we don't care if any well-meaning users get blocked from UTI, our users don't matter. What's more important is that on the off chance those hackers will come to this site, they'll have to waste a few seconds getting around this block.

It's pointless even if it's temporary, it will just be pointless for a shorter period of time.

I'm sure they'd be mildly miffed about it. That should show them.

Well, firstly, from that link posted by elfprince13, the page says:
Quote:
Calc Haven was hacked maliciously yesterday, no joke. The perpatrator appears to have come from a sort of underground community called https://www.vniss.net... and my account was used to destroy the site. I highly suggest you ban the following IP address:

203.160.1.*

(source: http://omnimaga.dyndns.org/index.php?showtopic=227&st=0)
Going to https : // www.vniss.net will bring you to a site called "Vietnam Internet Security System" (I'd assume that's what 'vniss' stands for.

Secondly, a DNS Lookup on that IP range shows:
Quote:
inetnum:      203.160.0.0 - 203.160.1.255
netname:      VNPT-VNNIC-VN
country:      VN
descr:        Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications (VNPT)
descr:        23 Phan Chu Trinh st., Hanoi capital, Vietnam
...

person:    Nguyen Xuan Cuong
nic-hdl:      NXC1-AP
e-mail:    cuong.ng@vnn.vn
address:      Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications (VNPT)
address:      18 Nguyen Du street, Hanoi capital, Vietnam
phone:        +84-4-9430427
fax-no:    +84-4-8226861
country:      VN
changed:      hm-changed@vnnic.net.vn 20040527

(source: http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/whois.ch?ip=203.160.1.1)

You mean DNS Lookups? Well, DNS Lookups will almost always show you the owner of that IP address. It's just a matter of contacting their abuse department.

Anyway, in the end, if you keep all your websites' scripts up-to-date (and don't use scripts with huge security holes, like phpBB or phpNuke) then you won't get hacked. If you have a forum, I'd choose SMF (free), IPB (paid) or vBulletin (paid) over phpBB, as phpBB has relatively large security holes, and gets hacked a lot.
