The AIME (American Invitational Math Exam) is tomorrow. Is anyone else here participating in this event or has participated in a past AIME? I can't wait. I get to miss 3 hours of school for a math test WOOT

I'm doing it, but my school signed up for the late contest date (I'm not sure when that is, but it's still a while ahead).

Is that the state math contest they're going on about at my school? I qualified, and It's the 16th for us. Last year I made too many schtupid errors on the pre-exam (e.g. not reading the question and squaring instead of cubing).

EDIT: Misspelled stupid. Very Happy

I'm pretty sure the late contest is the 22th.

IAmACalculator, the AIME is a nation-wide test, not just a state thing. It is the American Invitational Math Exam.

Last year I didn't make it past the AIME (I got six out of the 15), but this year I think I may have a shot at making it to the USAMO Smile Which for those of you who don't know is a two day test, spanning nine hours, and only six questions to which the responses must be in essay form. OMG Neutral

For the USAMO, I'd phrase it more as "proof form" than "essay form." I think I have pretty good chances of making it that far, but I doubt I'll do well enough on that to qualify for anything serious.

Never heard of it, either. Is it just high schools?

Yep, It's just highschools (and I think even junior high schools, but just for geniuses). I took it today. Wow, it was tougher this year than last year. The first problem was a gimmie, the rest got progressively harder (especially when you can't use your calculator Sad). I think I got 10 or 11 which may or may not put me through. We will have to wait and see when they give us back the results.

According to a note on solutions pamphlets, "all the problems can be solved using precalculus mathematics."

Looking at past exams, a large portion of the problems is number theory. There's algebra, which includes solving rational and/or polynomial equations in one variable and system of equations, complex numbers, simplifying radicals, and word problems. Geometry, including 3-D and analytical. Rarely is there a geometry problem using advanced trig, but you might have trig equations. Combinatorics is a big thing, and there'll be at least one or two questions on probability.

They're also big on using various methods of solving a problem, so if one of these is not your strong side (quite likely), don't give up.

Hmm. I don't know what combinatorics are, and I don't really know what analytical geometry is. I might know how to do them, but I dunno. The rest of it doesn't sound too hard.

Combinatorics: a branch of mathematics that studies collections of objects. For example, "How many ways are there to re-arrange the letters of the word DARKERLINE?" (of course, that's much simpler than the questions on the AIME).

Analytic geometry: geometry on the coordinate plane. For example, "Find the area of a square with three of its corners at (0,4), (3,0), and (4,7)."

907200 Wink Switching two of the same letter (such as the two E's or two R's) does not yield a different combination. I think you may need a little more practice. This is a hard exam.

Nowhere on the exam does it say that the questions are copyrighted, so here is a sample for you:

1990 AIME wrote:
Find ax5+by5 if the real numbers a, b, x, and y satisfy the equations

  • ax+by=3

  • ax2+by2=7

  • ax3+by3=16

  • ax4+by4=42.

Um... Maybe not. U_U You're right, it does sound really hard. Maybe later. <flimsy reasoning>How do we know those are the SAME e's and the SAME r's?</flimsy reasoning> I shouldn't expect to be able to do these at my level anyway.

EDIT: Well, here's a start.
I start by finding the change in the numbers:
ax+by=3
ax2+by2=7
ax3+by3=16
ax4+by4=42.
3,4,9,26
Hmm...
1,5,17

I'm stuck.

DarkerLiner, I have my packet from today if you want to look at the questions Wink

I found there to be alot of number theory more than anything else. There were quite a few sequence problems. There was only really one or two algebra problems. There were a few geometry problems. Only one combinatoric problem, which I was upset with because those were the ones I had prepared more for. I could photocopy the packet if you want Rolling Eyes

I know I'd be interested. If it isn't copyrighted, like DarkerLine said, it should be legal, right?
