Check how friendly it is when a program crashes.

It actually does make it easier to end the program. For instance you can click X a few times or click on the baloon. I notice they havein't fixed Paint either. Would it kill them to upgrade Paint? It hasn't been upgraded since Win 95!

At least it's nicer than a pop up popping up on top of everything and demanding focus.

(btw Paint 2.0 is coming soon, you can download the beta already.)

The windows 95 version actually had more features than the windows xp version we have today, like setting a transparent colour, saving/loading colour pallettes, and some more.

I have the following versions:

4053
5074
5048
5203

Here is how they test out.

4053 is very very slow built on Widnows Server 2003 Codebase though. Tons of extra fetures like the sidebar, but overall it looks like shit. Hell Add/Remove programs is in the recycle bin..

4074 is the same as 4053 except all the Icons are better, and it won't load unsigned drivers no matter what you do. This version sucks. It does add parental controls though.

5048 is the beta. It is a redo from the XP codebases go figure. It is really quite fast, and doesn't look too awful. They got rid of the sidebar thing too thank god and fixed the Aero them a little. Installer can't initialize a hard drive.

5203 has tranparent effects, yet a new skin. Is very fast, has all the features promised except the WinFS thing. Installer works perfect too. Has IE 7, which is built on a newer codebase, is mroe W3C compliant, has support for most of the Mozilla only tags, and added new proprietary MS Tags into the mix. Overall, it does not break compatiblility with anything. IE 7 renders pages faster even if the page is coded sloppy. Pages made to be viewed in Firefox render okay in IE 7 too.

IE 7 has tabbed browsing, 256-Bit SSL vs only 128-Bit, has re-arranged menus that are finally ordered a bit better, handles printing when over the margin better, has a built in cookie manager sort of like Mozilla, has built in Spell Check for filling out forms.... For IT professionals, MS tweaked the Group Policy templates too. There is not the ability to disable save as Desktop Wallpaper. Thank fucking god!

Using IE 7, I went to the Warez/Cracks/Porn all in one sites and did not pick up any toolbars, did not see any serrious popups, and best of all IE blocked the install of all software. Oh, the Pop-Up blocker works better now too!

...and is there any way us common citizens can get an msdn subscription?

Another question: how's program compatibility on Longhorn? I heard they were gonna make it uncompatible with everything old so people would be forced to buy it.

Question 1:
Yes, you can buy a subscription. http://msdn.microsoft.com/howtobuy/subscribers/default.aspx

However, most people are not goign to buy a subscription. It is usually companies that buy company accounts with MSDN, so they can test software deployments before spending lots of money. Where I work, we buy enough MS software for MS to actually give us the MSDN subscription free! We have MSDN Universal for Enterprise business. It costs more than the prices quoted above but is a litttle better.

Anyway, all you do is login, download what you want, and pick up a product key.

On to your second question. Longhorn has very good product compatibility. It runs everything that XP will run. Hell it is built right on XP. That makes it about 100% compatible with Win 2000, decently compatible with NT 4 and Win 9x, and yes it can still run 16-Bit Windows apps and DOS apps too! It sometimes has a little difficulty running Server 2003 stuff, where the 40xx builds had 100% compatibility with Windows server because that is what they were built off of. Overall, it is equal to XP as far as compatibility is concerned.

I am attaching a scalled down picture of it running on my laptop with 2 GB ram. I am back to running XP now BTW because XP is still a little better in my opinion.

Oh, I am back to XP.

If you are currious as to exactly what XP I run it is pretty much standard.

One thing you may notice about it is the amount of memory! I really like that big number. Smile

I envy you. Geez, would I like a msdn universal subscription at no additional cost to me!!

msdn universal subscription costs more in a month than I earn in a year Sad

Paint has been upgraded since Windows 95, in 95 it could only open/save bitmaps, now it does GIFS, JPEGs, and (I think) PNGs.

It is Media Player 10 the same as the new XP Version.

There is a Sync Manager though. I don't know what that does. I think it is supposed to sync things like Mp3 players or something.

I think Sync Manager is something like Activesync, maybe it's used to send stuff to pocketpc's?
