I've actually heard that Ad-a-ware sees similar (like spybot) programs as bad. Are they afraid for competition maybe?

I've heard that too, but I've never seen AdAware whine about Spybot so I don't really think that's true.

I use:
taskmngr.exe
msconfig.exe
del (command.com)
attrib.exe

:)

JBirk: In that order?

I think it detects the dummy spyware in the spybot S&D folder. Spybot gives you a message if you have ad-aware installed, but I turned it off so I don't remember exactly what it is.

If you quarantine SpyWare, the other program will detect spyware in the quarantine folder. That is all.

Both Ad-Aware and Spybot Are legit programs

One of my favorites is HiJackThis

As for my AntiVirus/spyware, the order isn't that important. I just listed some I know to be good products.

..and regedit.exe

attrib -r removes read-only better than windows will ever be able to.

help attrib at the command line will tell you all about it.

Anyway.

you use - or + depending on whether you want to set or remove an atrribute.

For example attrib -r -h -a -s file.ext

You can also use it with wildcards

attrib -r *.*

That is a lot faster than right clicking on all the files in a folder and manually removing the read only attribute.

Last but not least, there is cacls for NTFS

It will let you manage NTFS permissions from the commadn prompt.

What's the difference between FAT32 and NTFS? I don't see much after I changed my D: drive... but then again I don't do much with it.

I believe that with NTFS you don't lose data even if you turn off the power during Windows operation. However, with FAT32, you do. I don't know the reasoning behind it. Maybe someone can clarify?

Improved indexing, higher stability, more file attributes, access control, journaling, and more.

I know how to use the program. I was refering to which useful functions (note the emphasized useful) the program is out fitted with.

For your information, changing the attributes of all files in a folder is done easier with windows, simply by right clicking the folder and setting the attribute.

Though I admit that wildcards are an asset in most any program, because they enable you to do things like:
progname.exe -option ch*.exe
which would apply whatever function progname.exe provides to all exefiles starting with ch; I do not, however, see the usefulness of the any attribute change in windows. Files can be deleted no matter attributes, files can be seen no matter attributes, and the archive attribute also seems use- and pointless.

bottom line I find windows attributes useless

Windows can't delete files that haven't been unlocked (or something) after use, something I find usually happens to adware programs. At least I think that's the case. Either way, most adware I've personally run into couldn't be deleted after ending it's processes, and windows couldn't change it's attributes when attrib could.

I've just checked out cacls /? and must conclude that it's far more usefull than attrib, I will instead use that next time I have to.

I've never had that problem, though sometimes a program or file will reload itself so it is impossible to delete it, because it is in use all the time, in these situations I usually use Shredder2k. That will attempt to delete the file, fail, but succeed in renaming it so next time the program is shutdown it will not reopen, and I can delete the renamed file easily.

Neutral I just checked "cacl /?". I think that is the worst ui translation I've ever seen, the Danish translation (which is the version I have) is complete nonsense, I'll have to do a google to figure out what cacl is for.
