Most likely not as good as spybot s&d or ad aware would do. I can imagine itd do an ok job.

what i wanna know is why the f*ck cant M$ protect their OS in the first place instead of needing tools to remove it once its already infected

It is Malicious Software Removal tool.

It is not for Spyware or Adware.

All it does is remove about 10 to 20 different virus variants that make Microsoft look bad.

For example, when the latest mail worm comes out, it will remove that.

As for how good it is, not very. It only looks for files and registry keys in certain places, so it doesn't scan your system! However, it is extremely fast! If you have a Worm it will remove it in seconds if it is a popular variant.

a Program like McAfee Stinger is much better because it does a complete scan of your system.

I would recommend you use http://housecall.trendmicro.com and tell it to do a Virus and AntiSpyware Sweep.

Trend Micro is a trusted company now with a very good Anti Virus engine and definitions. Although they do not have the reputation of Symantec or McAfee, they are quite good.

Housecall is free and basically works by downloading an ActiveX Program which runs in IE. It then downloads the virus and spy-ware definitions to scan for viruses and Spyware. It does a complete scan of all files and will even walk you through cleanup.

Give it a try.

This reminds me of windows tech support. Now XP SP2 comes with a built in firewall, tech support asked if I had any firewalls on my computer, I said ya your firewall software. The tech guy kept refusing that microsoft has any type of firewall software. Even though I gave him every single bit of information I could give him about this firewall, and he still refused it. Is microsoft trying to hide a flaw in there network security of some sort?

Um, MS has had a firewall since Windows 2000.

However, it changed names twice.

First it was IP Security Policy (An MMC Snap-In, which still exists)

Second, ICS (Internet Connection Firewall)

Now, Windows Firewall.

Oh yeah... I remember in XP SP1 it was like almost hidden. Now they scream at you if it's not on.

More than likely the above command will not do exactly what you think.

It appears to want to delete everyong on C: but then you specifiy only delete files with an extension. I am sort of confused as to why you put *.*

that means files!

You obvioulsy got the syntax wrong; however, I still don't recomend anyone run that command.

Windows XP doesn't even have deltree, just so you know.

At least mine doesn't.

'deltree' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

What??? Why would it do that?

Quote:
del /s /f c:
it has to be DEL /s /f c:/ or else it deletes whatever directory you're in only.
Also, if you capitalize the del you can tell people that w/e problem they have is the the D.E.L. directory Razz

Um, you just have to stay away from rogue products.

As for Anti Spyware:
Ad-Aware
Spybot
Microsoft
PestPatrol
SpyWare Doctor

should be okay

Anti Virus:
Norton
Symantec
McAfee
Trend Micro
Avast
AVG
Nod32

If it isn't on the list, it doesn't mean it it is bad. It only means I can't be sure.
