I am tired of XP, so I am going to switch to Windows 2003 Workstation.

I stopped by Fry's today and purchased 1 Lincence for it and already got it activeated.

I am now doing windows update but have a lot more to do.

I have a screenshot now, and will have another one when I am done.

Well for starters, Widnows 2003 has a newer kernel and sligthly better memory management.

e.g. XP is to Linux 2.4 as 2003 is to 2.6

In addition, it is a bit more stable too.

Now for the major advantages:
TCP/IP supports a lot more concurrent connections!
2003 is better for running services like Apache2 or IIS.
It can run Exchnage, Oracle, or just about any other service better too.
E.g. MySQL will even perform a lot better on it!
2003 has a better security model with smarter default permissions.
IntelliMirror is included.
It supports a more complete File/Print sharing
Can become an Active Directory Domain Controller if DCPROMO is run.
Can run services such as DHCP/DNS

It also has some disadvantages too:
Costs more.
Cannot run games well mainly because many games detect server and get pissed off.
AntiVirus software usually won't install unless it is corporate version because you are supposed to pay more to protecte a server.
Does not do fast user switching (I don't think)

Fast user switching sucks anyway. Even the fastest computers freak out if you have several users open.

Actually, it depends on the priority class and the processes that are running in relation to CPU power.

In addition, there should be an additional 256 MB ram for each logged on user.

If you think that is bad, wait till you see terminal services. 2003 server can support multiple active users.

It really is better than XP; however, I do not think it is better for the general public. I still think everyday people should stick with XP. Probably XP home for your average Umpa Loompa.

XP Pro for joining a Domain, doing advanced networking, that sort of stuff.

The Theme comes with Tablet PC edition and Media Center Edition.

I actually manually unzipped the .exe for tablet PC and copied the theme files to the correct place. Now, there is another appearance update to the theme, and it is officially released for xp.

Best of all, no Windows Files get replaced. e.g. no cracks, no signed file changes... It comes directly from Microsoft, so you know it is as safe as you can get.

http://download.microsoft.com/download/a/c...dd9f/royale.zip

Download, unzip and execute.

It will add another wapplaper, set variousl options such as the icons to use, ... sounds.. (even though they are the same)...

After install, you have to go to the display properties and change the theme to Royal.

Oh, to use themes with Windows Server 2003, you have to turn on and start the theme service via services.msc.

Best of all, it is pure Microsoft

You can also get official Microsoft desktop background too. You can even get the longhorn ones.

There is only that one theme. Well maybe we can get Aero to work with XP, but that is doubtful.

Anyway, by backgrounds I mean wallpapers. You can easiliy find official MS wallpapers from the next version of Windows and use them on XP, 98, 2000, or even MacOS

Is that sarcasm Jbirk? :P

Now seriously, Microsoft probably makes sure that nothing from their site has a virus in it other than windows.

I figure What the heck. May as well trust them because they can do anything they want to our PCs running Windows.

What do you think Automatic Update is for?

I will tell you:
When dooms day comes, they will be able to shutdown the Internet and all PCs with one update!

Think about it. they can make any executable file and get 99% of all Windows hosts to run it at their will. That gives MS the power to down all Winodws computers!

I am not that paronoid.

What I am paronoid about is MS adding new root certificates, installing anti copy protection, adding new activation features...

For instance, SP2 is more difficult to deal with than SP1 on networks for many reasons. For one, it is more challenging to clone Workstations.
