ok, i have been messing with this friggin S**T for a week, WITH tech support
i have 5 network adapters, a usb to lan adapter, a 10/100 pci card, a 10/100/1000 pci card, an onboard lan hole, and a card in my brothers computer.
my router is a 10 baseT provided by my DSL company
the problem is, is that the first 3 lan solutions in my list no longer work.
they stopped working after a foreign computer was introduced to the network, it, like the rest gives me a "network cable unplugged" error. this is still the case even after i re installed the drivers, used different cables, and put them in different computers.
i tried putting a hub between the router and the adapter, but with no avail. all that happens is that nothing on the adapter side lights up, adapter, hub, or otherwise. the only thing we could think of was that my card, usb adapter, and onboard are fried for good, but that explanation makes no sense at all.
ANY IDEAS PLEASE |

Where these tests with 3 computers in the LAN or 2?
Try the usb/10/100/10/100/1000 cards with just 2 computers, directly, no router or hub in between.
If they still don't work, they're simply broken.
HOWEVER, remember that it could also be the cables, so test with cables that definately work.

You'll need special cables if you test with no hub in between.. |

Are you trying to make one compter basicly a router? Becasue if you do that you have to bridge all the connections. |

If you connect computer to computer (NIC to NIC), you will need a Crossover Cable instead of a straight through cable. A cross-over cable is EIA/TIA 568A on one end and 568B on the other end.
Uninstall all drivers if you have special drivers.
Go into the Device manager and remove all network adapters.
Shutdown and remove them all. Then put them in one at a time rebooting each time.
Windows should detect each nic when the computer starts up. Configure the drivers 1 at a time then test for a link light.
Upon installing a NIC, I would use a standard straight-through CAT 5e or better (known good) cable and connect it to a swith. You should obviously see a link light on both the nic and the switch.
Once you get all the network adapters working, I would then move on to installing and testing protocol stacks, clients, and services.
I should also warn you that Widows 95/98/ and ME do not get along well with too many Network Adpaters and stacks. The management of protocol stacks and bindings is iffy at best in Win98. For example, you cannot even change the bindinf order of the protocols without removing them all and installing them in order.
In addition Win9x is prone to Winsock Corruption problems too. I recomend you do not have more than 2 Network adapters unless you are using Widnows 2000, XP, Longhorn, or something Non-Microsoft.
