A friend of mine is looking for a video card (on eBay, he's addicted to it) for his computer*, as his current one is pretty crappy. He doesn't really know anything about video cards, and asked me. I know even less than he does. So, some questions:

->What matters in video cards specs? memory, speed, ...?
->What would be a good video card for around $70-$100? (rough guess)
->Any particular manufacturer?
->Is eBay a good place to get them? If not, what would be a good supplier?

*P4 desktop, sufficient RAM, about 1.5 years old. If you need more precise information I can ask.

I'll look forward to the posts on this topic, I'm out looking myself and have an equally small knowledge on graphic cards Laughing

A great budget card is the 6600GT series. But the graphics card won't matter unless you have a bloody fast cpu to pair it up with. Since your budget is about $100, get an ATI 9800 card online. Wink

->Any particular manufacturer? NVidia for compatibility, ATI for cheaper video cards that won't work half the time but if they do they'll be faster and produce a higher quality image compared to an equally expensive NVidia card.
->Is eBay a good place to get them?  If not, what would be a good supplier? 2nd hand hardware isn't worth it, go to a shop or decent website like newegg.com

If the name of the card has a high number in it, it's fast.

Also across brands? is an ATI Radeon 9600 better than a GForce 6800?

No It is now. 6800 > 9600. The ATI X800 series is equal to performance of the Geforce 6800 series.
