i'm not sure where this should go, so i guess if here's not a good place, someone could move it.

i was just thinking about how the 89 and 92 and those calcs often say "decompressing" when you start up a big program, and was just wondering if it would be possible to incorporate a space-saving compression/decompression utility into the 83 series.

maybe it could be a flash utility like Krolypto. it could automatically compress programs above a certain size, and then when you run them from the homescreen, it would automatically decompress them for you.

so. does it sound feasible?

DWedit's PUCrunch shell does something like this I think. I'm not sure why 83+ progs aren't already compressed when they are archived, it would really be helpful. I guess TI felt it was unnecessary. An 89 program would have to be really big (or use some high-level compression) if it keeps you waiting. RW (de)compresses kilobytes so fast it's not noticeble.

Corridor99 has decompressing when I run it from VTI

Othello (the one by that French dude), Corridor99, TiChess, and (i think) Phoenix Platinum all have a noticeable "decompressing" message when you run them on my friend's 89-Ti.

On-calc compression is not feasible, given that you want to use algorithms that save considerable space--just as a base for comparison, on the C64 it could easily take a whole night to compress a program. Decompression is a completely different business.

dang it! how about for off-calc compression-on-calc decompression?

What's wrong with that? I think the real problem is no program management.

I guess thats not exactly what i meant. i think i meant the gui is bad. it doesn't have continuous scrolling, instead it jumps everrytime you get to the bottom of the screen...also somewhat off topic, but has anybody figured out how to play that wierd little game that comes built into CrunchyOS

Whoops! That's what I meant to say: CrunchyOS. Serves me right for posting in the wee hours. A GUI is nice, but -eh- not totally critical.

actually, both CrunchyOS, and basicBuilder utilize PUCrunch...try googling it...see how many hits you'll get. it seems to be a fairly common compression algorithm

Must be because RW doesn't use "algorithms that save considerable space."

not sure, its this wierd little game, and the opening screen has a dog on it. doesn't show up in mirage, or the program list. ive hidden and unhidden everything using krolypto but still nothing. im not sure what it was called, cause I deleted CrunchyOS, but it shows up at the top of the programs list

It's Chu Chu Rocket. CrunchyOS has a feature that lets you put programs into the App itself instead of having a separate program. Check out the manual.
