I don't believe so, no. You can emulate it if you have it on your computer, with alcohol 120 or something, but I don't think you can watch it any way by putting it in your cd-rom drive.

I think DVD and CD have a completely different data format anyways, requiring different hardware to read.

That is correct, this would be like trying to play a VHS tape, in a cassette player, (if you ignore the fact the physical size of the media are different). To play back DVD you need hardware that supports it, like a dvd rom or dvd burner which you can pick one up a high quality one for in the ballpark of $40-$100 depending which you are getting (rom vs burner), and where from.

Yeah, you can buy an internal drive for a very low price. It should be very easy to install it too. I would say it will take 5 to 15 minutes.

If you only want to watch DVDs and not do anything else, you can buy a DVD-ROM for $20.

You will need software such as PowerDVD, WinDVD or something else with an MPEG-2 Codec. You can probably download a codec if windows does not alreay have one for the Windows Media Player.

If you want DVD playback + 52x CD/RW Combo Drives those are $30 to $40

DVD Burners begin at $40 for an okay 8x Burner.

16X Dual layer +-R/RW burners are about $70-$110

Any version of Windows 98 Second Edition or higher should work fine with a DVD ROM, and 2000/XP are great with Burners. They support correct ATAPI, AOAPI, EIDE... capabilites for burning.

98 SE can probably be made to work with the proper ASPI drivers.

Yeah, the disks are expensive, but you might want to already buy a Dual Layer burner, so you don't have to buy a new burner in the future if you want to burn dual layer anyway.

Of course, the DL disks will lower in price too. ($1 a disc in one year-my guess)

Just buy a 12x or 8x burner for $20 to $40.

If you can get a Plextor or Lite-On. Both have good reputations.
