MS Word has thought of another way to annoy me, when I select something and press any key but delete it acts like I pressed the left button. This sucks because I'm used to shift+end-ing text, backspacing it, and/or typing something to replace it.

Normally:
Select text,
Backspace,
Text is removed,
The cursor is placed at start of what was selected

Now:
Select text,
Backspace,
The cursor is placed at start of what was selected.

What did I mess up and how do I fix it?

"Typing replaces selection" was turned off for some reason.

why does that option exist? there are people who select things without the intention of overtyping them?

It's there so you can select a whole bit of text and move it around with tab instead of replacing it with a tab.
