I want to figure out how well my wireless network is working. It's working so good I don't believe it. Go to this site, and click 'check your speed', and tell me what you get, I get 2370.

I play half life 2, and I get a constant 32/33 ping.
Is this for real? Im running a 128kbps router through two floors to the reciever. Where the router is, I can't make a cell phone call, there's no service, so I wasn't expecting a good signal, and where the reciever is there are electrical components everywhere to mess with the signal. This is awesome that I get such good speed. What do you guys get on the test above, and what internet configurations are you running?

Your wifi is probably running at 54mbps, or at least more than 2370kbps, so even with a poor signal you won't be slowing down your internet connection, just your wlan connection. Remember, internet connections are only as fast as the slowest link, so the wlan speed won't matter untill it goes below your ethernet speed (per wlan pc).
Start adding more pc's and you'll notice it when your signal's bad.
It's also pretty hard to mess up a wlan signal, the frequencies are far too high and powerfull, unless you're in a testing zone for nuclear weapons I don't think it should get a bad signal other than due to distance from the access point.

We have DSL (and 802.11g 56k WiFi), but we must be pretty far from the telephone exchange or something..... Sometimes I get download speeds of 20-30kbps  |

Anyway, another test (cleaned my cache) while connected to the wlan of somebody in my street, about 50 yards from my home, through a handfull of walls, a shed or two, a bunch of trees, and me, lowest signal power (=11 mbps)...

This site has probably the worst speed testing ever....
First time I ran the test (with three other computers connected to the same network) I got 1443 Kbps. Second time I got 6453 Kbps. Third time I got 3905!!
For Americans, this site is probably the best, since it's location-specific. For everyone else, I'd try this one I just found on google. |

I wonder firstly how well this works, and secondly if there's something funky going on with my connection, which I hope is not the case.

It's because they measure how long it takes your system to load an image in your browser, which shouldn't take more than 0.1 seconds if the image is already cached.

Why a slow harddrive? I have a 4800rpm 40gb harddrive that was still catching up with me closing world of warcraft by the time I did the test and it only took 0.1 seconds to load.

This seems more accurate, i think 1.5 megabits actually is the speed of my internet connection. |

Subjective rating Great I can download faster from servers in the US or Japan than this site's sucky Europe test server. : /
If you want usable results, just use linux and check the network monitor from time to time.
