This is my problem. My friend and I just recently bought and installed gigabet ethernet enabled motherboards. To experiment and see how fast the connection is, I bought a gigabet ethernet crossover cable. We connected them and checked to see if we could see each other.

That's where is the problem. We can't see each other.

Can anyone give an explantion or a fix to this?

We are both running Windows XP.

connect the cable,
assign ip addresses, (1 pc better have 192.168.0.1 and the other 192.168.0.2)
set subnetmask,
install/enable sharing of files and printers,
set same workgroup,
look in network environment.

If it doesn't work then turn off your firewalls.

If it still doesn't work your systems suck and you should buy a $10 router.
